2008 vs. 2025 USCIS civics test: which one do I take?
Your naturalization interview date does not decide the test version. The key date is when you filed Form N-400. Use the rule below before you begin studying so you do not prepare for the wrong question bank.

Study the 2008 civics test: 100 possible questions, up to 10 asked, and 6 correct answers needed.
Study the 2025 civics test: 128 possible questions, up to 20 asked, and 12 correct answers needed.
If you are unsure which date USCIS uses for your application, check your filing records and confirm your test version directly with USCIS. A rescheduled interview does not by itself make the interview date the test-version cutoff.

Use your USCIS online account, filing confirmation, or receipt notice to identify when the naturalization application was filed.

Compare the date with October 20, 2025.
Before the cutoff points to the 2008 version. The cutoff date or later points to the 2025 version.

Do not rely on a study app or printed booklet unless it clearly names the same test version.

Ask USCIS if your filing history is unusual.
If an application was rejected, withdrawn, or refiled, confirm which filing controls instead of guessing.
If you take the 2008 version
Study 100 questions and prepare for 6 out of 10.
The 2008 test is oral. The officer asks up to 10 questions from the official pool of 100, and you pass after answering 6 correctly. Names of current officials and location-based answers can change, so check official updates near your interview date.

If you take the 2025 version
Study 128 questions and prepare for 12 out of 20.
The 2025 test is also oral. The officer asks up to 20 questions from the official pool of 128, and you pass after answering 12 correctly. Because the pool and interview round are larger, practice recalling answers aloud in mixed order instead of memorizing the list sequence.

65/20 special consideration
The reduced study list depends on your test version too.
Applicants who are at least 65 years old and have been lawful permanent residents for at least 20 years at the time of filing may receive special consideration. They study 20 specially designated questions, the officer asks 10, and 6 correct answers are required. Qualifying applicants may take the civics test in their language of choice.

Does my interview date decide which civics test I take?
